Challenge

Businesses running Windows Server and Active Directory face an unappealing choice: escalating per-seat SharePoint licences for a portal few people fully adopt, or a patchwork of shared drives, email circulars and paper forms in which internal knowledge quietly leaks away. For regulated manufacturers there is a further constraint — personal data must remain on your own premises, and auditability has to be watertight.

Solution

Atrium is a self-hosted intranet portal that runs entirely on your existing Windows Server. News, documents, the event calendar, the staff directory, KVP forms and IT assets come together in one branded portal — with no cloud runtime, no separate database and no per-seat licence. Microsoft 365 can be connected optionally, but it is never a prerequisite.

Why it matters

01

Data sovereignty by design

Every record lives in a directory on your own server; backup is a simple file copy, making on-premise data residency structural rather than contractual.

02

No per-seat cost

A flat infrastructure fee — whether 50 or 500 staff, the licence does not scale with your headcount.

03

Genuine AD integration

Atrium reads from your on-premise Active Directory and writes back via PowerShell, keeping the directory and IT assets a single source of truth.

04

M365 as an enhancement

Existing Microsoft 365 data such as Outlook events and SharePoint documents can surface inside the portal — and without M365, Atrium runs fully offline.

Features

Newsfeed

Articles with categories, pinning, drafts and AI-assisted authoring.

Multi-site calendar

Events across several sites and countries in a single view, with maintenance-free public-holiday calculation and no external API.

Self-hosted file storage

Upload, download and delete documents OneDrive-style — entirely on your own server.

KVP forms

Structured continuous-improvement submissions with an admin review queue, mapping directly to ISO 9001 and lean processes.

Staff directory

A team directory that can synchronise from Entra ID or your on-premise Active Directory.

IT asset management

Device and asset records with write-back to Active Directory via PowerShell.

Social-media scheduler

Schedule and publish to LinkedIn and Meta/Facebook straight from the intranet, with a dry-run preview.

AI assistant & idea box

An AI chat grounded on your internal content, plus a separate AI idea box for automation suggestions.

How it works

01

Everything in one place

News, files, calendar, directory, KVP forms and IT assets — one URL, one login, one source of truth.

02

On your server

Next.js as a Windows service behind IIS, running on Node 20 with NSSM — no Kubernetes, no separate database, no Redis.

03

Optionally connected to M365

OIDC single sign-on, Outlook calendar, SharePoint documents and Entra ID sync are individually switchable and can be disabled at any time.

04

Live in days

Atrium uses the Windows certificate store and runs behind HTTPS-inspection proxies (Zscaler, Avast); name, colours and quick-links are configured at runtime.

In practice

A mid-size manufacturer with operations in two countries and several hundred staff runs Atrium in production on its own Windows Server infrastructure. News, KVP workflows, the cross-border calendar and the M365 calendar overlay all run with no cloud runtime — maintained by the in-house IT team using skills they already have.

Who it's for

For businesses of 50 to 500 staff on Windows Server and Active Directory — particularly quality-managed or regulated manufacturers with KVP and ISO obligations that want a data-sovereign intranet without cloud lock-in or per-seat cost.

Tech & operation

Next.js 15, React 19, TypeScript and Tailwind v4 with JWT sessions (jose), PBKDF2 password hashing and JSON-file storage, deployed as a Windows service (NSSM with auto-restart and log rotation) behind IIS — Node 20, IIS and NSSM are all it needs.

Pricing & model

Atrium is a flat-fee software licence: one investment, unlimited users and no recurring per-seat cost, optionally combined with implementation and configuration services. Pricing on request.

FAQ

We already pay for SharePoint — why Atrium? +

SharePoint licences scale with headcount and depend on an ongoing Microsoft commitment. Atrium runs on infrastructure you already own, with no per-seat cost, and surfaces your SharePoint documents inside the portal where useful — it complements Microsoft 365 rather than forcing a migration.

Is JSON-file storage robust enough for our size? +

For businesses with a few hundred users and several thousand records — Atrium's typical range — file storage is entirely appropriate, and backup is a single copy operation. Where database-scale requirements are foreseeable, we address that during scoping.

Is Atrium production-ready — and in which languages? +

Atrium is in production at a manufacturer today, and the core modules are stable. The interface is currently German, with French and English on the roadmap; in-app user management and white-labelling are being finalised.
